General Questions
Who answers the questions that are posted?
Other Ocean City visitors. Nobody can better answer questions about Ocean City than the people who actually come here.
I've posted a question but no answers have been posted. What's the deal?
All I can do is ask that you be patient. This website is just starting so some questions may not be answered right away. I'll do what I can to find someone to answer those questions or find out the answers myself.
Why should we rate answers?
This is one of the great things about Ocean City Answers. It allows Ocean City visitors to provide answers but also allows other experienced Ocean City visitors to help identify which answers are the best. Some questions may have several answers that would work but one answer may rise above the rest as the definitive way to do something.
What order do the answers appear in?
There is a ranking system that is calculated based on the number of ratings and the overall average rating of an answer. When a question only has a few answers without many ratings, they may just appear in the order they were posted, oldest first.
How do I customize my profile (e.g. uploading a photo of myself)?
Sign in to Your Account and go to Your Profile. On that page you can upload a photo of yourself and write a brief bio about yourself. Click "Save Changes".
Why does my icon show up as a boy when I'm really a girl (or the other way around)?
You were to lazy to upload a profile image! :) See above.
How do I stop receiving email notifications of new answers and comments in a question thread?
There are a couple of ways to accomplish this. If you only want to stop receiving notifications for specific questions, sign in to Your Account and look for questions you've asked (or selected to be notified when posting an answer or comment) questions in your watch list. At the end of each line is a checkbox that sets the notification flag on or off. Uncheck any you do not want to receive notifications for. If you wish to stop receiving notifications for every question, sign in to Your Account and go to Your Profile. Near the bottom of the page is a checkbox labeled "Turn off all notification emails I'm currently receiving". Check that box and click "Save Changes".
How do I cancel my account?
Sign in to your account and go to Your Profile.
There is an option at the bottom of the form labeled "Cancel My Account". Check the box
and Save Changes.
Canceling your account does two things:
1) You wll no longer be able to sign in and post
2) Your profile will no longer be vieawable and you will no longer show up in the "Community" listings
Canceling DOES NOT remove questions, answers & comments you have already posted.
Technical Questions
Why does this site look "messed up" in my browser?
Various web browsers display web pages in different ways. There are approved standards for constructing web pages, but not all browsers conform to these standards. This makes it difficult for any site to look the same in every browser. I chose to follow these standards and put in fixes where necessary for specific browsers. We attempt to make sure the site looks correct in the most popular browsers used today. These are: Microsoft Internet Explorer 7, Mozilla Firefox 1.5.09 & 2.0.0.1 (for Mac), Opera 9.10 and Safari 2.0.4. If you find a problem with our site while using one of these browsers, please bring it to our attention by sending us a message. The site was developed using and looks best in Firefox because it most closely follows web standards.
When I click certain links nothing happens. Can you explain?
The most likely reason is that the web browser you are using doesn't support the level of javascript necessary to interact with the website. Another possible cause is web browser security settings that are too strict. Most modern web browsers like those listed above should not have any problems with our website.
When I try to "Sign In" to my account I'm redirected back to the Sign In screen. What's going on?
If you see a red error message, it means your username and password do not match our records. If you do not see an error message, make sure you have cookies enabled in your browser. Cookies are required to sign in and post questions and answers.
Why do I keep getting error messages? Am I doing something wrong?
Usually error messages are a result of an incorrect form entry. Either a required field was left incomplete or an entry did not pass validation. Re-check what you entered in the form. There are other times when you will receive an error message that doesn't make much sense. This is usually due to a glitch in the system (though it can also be due to a server problem). I will receive an email notification when such an error occurs and correct the glitch.
